In earlier times reed fields were planted on the lowlands outside the dikes. With the sedimentation by the river, the fields were transformed from reed beds into osier fields.
New osier fields are still being constructed and exploited for the brushwood products. Old osier fields are maintained in the context of culture and nature conservation. With Van Aalsburg an experienced and enthusiastic team works in one of the few remaining Dutch crafts: the craft of wicker worker - in Dutch “griendwerker” - in old and new osier fields.
