In earlier times, reed fields were planted on the lowlands outside the dikes. With the sedimentation by the river, the fields were transformed into osier fields.
Nowadays osier fields are still being planted, maintained and exploit for brushwood production. Van Aalsburg is one of the few remaining companies in the Netherlands still being active in the ancient - but nowadays modern and commercial - craft of producing brushwood products, like:
Willow fences and other garden decoration
(Classic) Fascine mattresses
Modern geotextile fascine mattresses
Revetments
Dust- or silt fences
Rootstocks
