Modern fascine mattresses
Geotextile fascine mattresses are constructed differently than classic fascine mattresses. Geotextile mattresses, with the woven loops, do not need any brushwood filling and less weips. These mattresses can be composed in various sizes: from 5 x 5 meters to 25 x 320 meters.
The geotextile has loops woven into the cloth where ropes can be tied. A framework of weips will be placed on the textile, just like the classic fascine mattress method. The intersections are tied up with the rope, connecting the framework to the geotextile. Once the mattress will be in the water, the rope will tighten due to the sisal-polypropyleen composition.
Sinking the modern fascine mattress
Once the framework of weips (at least two layers) is tied to the cloth, the mattress is ready to be sunk with basalt stones to keep the mattress and underlying fabric in place. The framework prevents the stones to roll and offers, together with the mattress, a good protection to banks and bottoms of canals and rivers.
Besides these modern fascine mattresses, Van Aalsburg also constructs mattresses with 3 or 4 layers of weips, and fillings of brushwood. Read more about these classic fascine mattresses or traditional mattresses.
